Get your Underwater Navigation Specialty with Under The Sea

Underwater Navigation

The Underwater Navigator Specialty is designed to help you become more confident, aware, and efficient underwater by developing advanced navigation skills in real-world diving conditions. Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to accurately navigate using both a compass and natural references while improving your awareness, communication, and overall confidence underwater.

You’ll begin with approximately 2–4 hours of self-paced eLearning, completed on your schedule. The academic portion covers compass navigation, natural navigation techniques, navigation patterns, distance estimation, environmental awareness, and strategies for navigating effectively in varying visibility and conditions.

The course includes 3 open water training dives, each focused on building precision, awareness, and confidence underwater:

  • Dive One focuses on the fundamentals of compass navigation, including proper compass handling, reciprocal headings, straight-line navigation, and accurate turning techniques.

  • Dive Two builds on natural navigation skills such as using depth contours, sunlight, wave patterns, reef structures, and environmental references to navigate more efficiently underwater while improving distance estimation and direction awareness.

  • Dive Three combines compass and natural navigation techniques into more advanced navigation scenarios, including navigation patterns, problem-solving exercises, and navigating dive sites confidently in real-world conditions.

Throughout the course, our instructors will guide you every step of the way—helping you refine your technique, improve your underwater awareness, and feel more comfortable navigating independently.

By the end of the course, you won’t just earn your Underwater Navigator Specialty certification—you’ll feel significantly more confident finding your way underwater and navigating dive sites safely and efficiently anywhere in the world.
